The group attempted to take the song in a different direction, although Bono was reluctant. The sessions for The Joshua Tree started in earnest in 1986, and U2 were recording at the Georgian mansion Danesmoate House in Dublin. According to Clayton, these early versions of the song sounded too sentimental and "very traditional because the chords just went round and round and round". The track consisted of a Yamaha drum machine beat and a bass part played by bassist Adam Clayton using an Ibanez bass guitar with a short scale. Guitarist the Edge considered the song at that point to be "awful". The band continued to work on the song at STS Studios, creating many permutations of the track, but not making any progress. ![]() During this time, a rough demo of "With or Without You" was written, with lead vocalist Bono composing the song's chord sequence. bought to review material the group had written during The Unforgettable Fire Tour. In late 1985, U2 convened at a house that drummer Larry Mullen Jr. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the song 131st on its list of " The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". "With or Without You" is U2's second most frequently covered song. It is frequently performed on the band's tours, and it has appeared on many of their compilation albums and concert films. Ostensibly a troubled love song, the track's lyrics were inspired by Bono's conflicting feelings about the lives he led as a musician and domestic man.Ĭritics praised the song upon its release. The song originated from a demo recorded in late 1985 that the group continued to work on throughout The Joshua Tree sessions. Like a lot of folks, this was where I jumped on board, though it was almost two years later when I discovered the album through a radio commercial for a contest to see them perform in Australia." With or Without You" is a song by Irish rock band U2. (I was a kid in Ohio.) The commercial featured snippets of their hits, and it dawned on me that I liked them all, so maybe I should check them out. The choice was between TJT and the more recent Rattle & Hum-both had two songs I recognized. I’d never actually heard Streets before I pressed play on the tape. Hearing the opening strains for the first time was mind blowing. I’d never heard of “ambient”, or Brian Eno, but all of a sudden here was music I didn’t hear on pop radio, that hinted at something more. This wasn’t just where I jumped on board with U2.īy the end of that first track, I was a fan. ![]() It’s the first album I obsessed over by ANY band, the one I consider as ground zero for me being a music fan, for reading the liner notes, for scrutinizing album art, etc. Its literally why I’m on a site like this at all.Īs well, here’s my personal “review” from May 30th 2018 listening to the album straight through for the first time, especially in high fidelity. Where the Streets Have No Name - Opening with some atmospheric organs, into the perfect Edge guitar riff. Near perfect tempo, with a great bass line that is a little more hidden. I Still Haven’t Found What I’m looking For - Almost as if the bass is playing the lead in this one. Very powerful lyrics, with Bono at his best “pained” delivery. I’ve always thought that this is the weakest of the biggest three from this album, but on vinyl I may have been wrong. With or Without You - Absolute perfection. ![]() The best bass line ever recorded in music. *****īullet in the Blue Sky - Wicked drums to open this number. Heavier drum track and lyrics, heaviest song on the album. A lot of spoken lyrics throughout the song. Distinct guitar solo in the song which isn’t always the case in U2 songs. Running to Stand Still - Blues guitar riff to open this up. First verse is Bono’s foray into Lou Reed lyric delivery. Lyrics are the the focus, with the instruments placed more in the background for the first half of the song. Chorus softens up, like the song title suggests. ![]()
